MILWAUKEE - The season of giving has started, with schools, churches and businesses kicking off food drives that have become annual holiday traditions. But many food banks are asking donors to think twice before dropping ramen noodles and frosted cereals in donation barrels.
Many commonly donated foods are high in salt, sugar or calories, making them poor choices for people with high blood pressure, diabetes and other diet-related health problems. With more people turning to food banks and for longer periods of time, agency officials say they need donations but they'd like to see people give the kind of healthy and nutritious items they'd serve to their own families.

There is a growing body of literature on why people give. But less is said about how people make the choices they do when deciding to donate to one organization versus another, to support one cause and not a related one, to respond to one appeal instead of others. Columbia College has launched a new fundraising website that allows would-be donors to choose and place into a virtual shopping cart specific products they want to contribute to.

For the month of March, Lifeblood is giving its donors the opportunity to choose between an Irish-themed t-shirt or surrendering that gift in exchange for a donation to the Lifeblood Educational Scholarship program in their name.
Funds funneled into this program provide scholarships to students at local high schools who assist Lifeblood by holding blood drives and finding donors. Donors who choose to support this program will be asked to sign an L-shaped piece of artwork , which will then be displayed at a donor center or in a mobile unit.

Many people want to do something for those who are in need of the basics of life, particularly during the holiday season, so they choose a project or an agency that needs the help of volunteers or donors. Many others feel that way, too, but they don't do anything. They say they don't know what to do or how to do it, but being helpful is easy.
Here are some thoughts.
