Is it custom-designing a baby in the image of your favorite celebrity? The next logical step of the evolutionary desire for attractiveness? A silly result of sperm-donor anonymity rules? Or all that and more? The Los Angeles sperm bank that began a celebrity- inspired Donor Look-a-Like service has raised eyebrows and hackles among champions and critics of artificial insemination.

The study found that stem cells derived from umbilical cord blood, now used mostly to treat children with leukemia, are also an effective transplant source for adults unable to find a bone marrow donor. Roughly 10,000 such U.S. patients die every year.

Finding a compatible donor is always a challenge, and certain tissue traits of the donor and the patient must match," said Joseph H. Antin M.D., chief of the Stem Cell Transplantation Program and medical director of [Dana-Farber]'s unrelated donor program. "The best potential donor most likely comes from the patient's same ethnic group, and many minority groups are underrepresented in the national registry. More donors of diverse race and ethnicity increase the opportunity that all people will have an equal chance of finding a matched donor.
"Helping to give someone's parent, sibling or child a second chance at life is a rare gift. Often there is only one matched donor in the entire world. Too often there are none," said Deborah Liney, manager of unrelated donor/transplant services at...
