Duquesne University President Charles J. Dougherty broke six weeks of silence Wednesday on his dismissal of law school Dean Donald J. Guter amid demands from some faculty and students for an explanation.
In a letter to law school faculty, Dougherty said Guter failed "to perform as a part of the university's administrative team and to effectively manage the school." Dougherty rejected a request to appear Friday at a law school faculty meeting.

Duquesne University has dumped Donald J. Guter as dean of its law school after two years of tension between law faculty and the president.
Officials at the Catholic institution cited "unmet expectations" for his removal after three years at the helm, while Guter blamed "personal animus" that he says he tried to reconcile earlier this year.

In a letter to law school faculty, Dougherty said Guter failed "to perform as a part of the university's administrative team and to effectively manage the school." Dougherty said that Guter "could not and would not accept" that responsibility, so "there was no alternative to removing him as dean.
