IT appears that the concerted anti-software piracy campaigns, carried out by the Ministry of Domestic Trade And Consumer Affairs, are bearing fruit, albeit slowly. According to figures released by the third annual Business Software Alliance (BSA) and IDC Global Software Piracy study, Malaysia's software piracy rate recorded a reduction of one percentage point to 60%. This translated to a loss of US$149 million to the local software industry.
`The reduction is expected as efforts to reduce software piracy in Malaysia have been sustained, with the Ops Tulen campaign being its flag bearer since 2002. DELL has opened its first retail outlet in Malaysia. The outlet is a result of a partnership with TecAsia Sdn Bhd, the retail arm of Mesdaq- listed FTEC Resources Bhd.
Officiating the launch was Datuk Mohd Shafie Apdal, Minister of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs. Also present were Pang Yee Beng, General Manager of Dell Malaysia; B K Tang, Managing Director of FTEC Resources; and Datuk Danny Ooi, founder of the Malaysia Book of Records.
