  • IT appears that the concerted anti-software piracy campaigns, carried out by the Ministry of Domestic Trade And Consumer Affairs, are bearing fruit, albeit slowly. According to figures released by the third annual Business Software Alliance (BSA) and IDC Global Software Piracy study, Malaysia's software piracy rate recorded a reduction of one percentage point to 60%. This translated to a loss of US$149 million to the local software industry. `The reduction is expected as efforts to reduce software piracy in Malaysia have been sustained, with the Ops Tulen campaign being its flag bearer since 2002. This is testimony to the focused and committed efforts of the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs,' says Tarun Sawney, Business Software Alliance (BSA) Director - Anti-piracy, Asia...

  • What's happening with the Goods & Services Tax in Malaysia? Are we any closer to implementing it? WHERE are we at with the elusive Goods & Services Tax (GST) in Malaysia? The much-talked about GST has been toyed with for many years now, the idea having first taken root in the 1993 Budget when the-then Finance Minister announced the impending introduction of a Sales and Service Tax (SST). Following this announcement, SST did not materialise, and many years later, it made a re-appearance in the form of the GST in the 2005 Budget proposals, and was to have been introduced with effect from Jan 1, 2007. However, this did not materialise and GST remained dormant until it resurfaced again in December 2009. This time, the Government appeared more intent on introducing GST as evidenced by the re...

  • This spring, as American drivers faced record-high prices at the gas pump, Republican lawmakers thought their stars had finally aligned. By preying on the panicky public consumer, and emphasizing the need to increase domestic drilling, they thought they could pass the energy bill -- and have a ready-made election-year platform: "I'm glad oil prices are up, I'm glad gas prices are up," Sen. Trent Lott, R-Miss., told the press in March. "I'm sorry I'm not running this year. [Pete Domenici] and Sen. Bill Frist, R-Tenn., dropped some of the bill's more controversial aspects, including a provision that would have exempted MTBE gasoline-additive producers from liability for groundwater contamination. • WASHINGTON - Vice President Joe Biden and Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton launched high-level talks with the Chinese on Monday by pointedly criticizing Beijing's crackdowns on democracy advocates, arguing that long-term stability depends on respecting human rights. At the same time, the world's two biggest economies clashed over America's massive trade deficit with China. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner said it would be in China's self-interest to allow its currency to appreciate at a faster rate and allow Chinese consumer interest rates to rise. The stronger yuan and higher Chinese interest rates would help boost domestic demand and help lower America's trade deficit, which hit an all-time high with China last year.
