MADISON, Wis. - A Dane County circuit judge ruled Monday that Wisconsin's domestic partnership registry does not violate the state's constitutional ban on gay marriage. Judge Daniel Moeser's ruling was a major victory for the state's largest gay rights group, which defended the registry established in 2009 to bestow legal rights to same-sex couples.
MADISON - Social conservatives asked the Wisconsin Supreme Court on Thursday to strike down the state's new domestic partnership law, saying it violates a constitutional ban on gay marriage. The lawsuit, filed by three members of Wisconsin Family Action, acknowledges the court will not have time to act before the law goes into effect next month but says justices should halt registrations as soon as possible.
Voters in Washington will consider an expansion of the state's domestic partnership law that would include additional benefits for same-sex couples, Yahoo reports. Currently, the state allows unmarried heterosexual couples and same-sex couples to register as domestic partners and receive certain benefits, such as the ability to visit a partner in the hospital and inheritance rights.
OLYMPIA -- Gov. Chris Gregoire has signed into law a bill that recognizes out-of-state same-sex marriages with all the rights and protections given to registered domestic partnerships in Washington. Legislators who supported the measure described it as a "technical correction" that closes a loophole in the law it replaces. Previously, Washington recognized only domestic partnerships and civil unions. But same-sex marriages received no benefits coverage.
MADISON, Wis. - Wisconsin's attorney general said Friday he will not defend a new law that grants same-sex couples spousal benefits such as hospital visitation and inheritance, saying lawmakers went against voters' decision not to extend such privileges. When the people have spoken by amending our Constitution, I will abide by their command," said Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen, who believes the law is unconstitutional. "When policy makers have ignored their words, I will not.
Portland won a split decision Friday in its fight with Catholic Charities of Maine over the city's domestic partnership ordinance. S. District Court Judge D. Brock Hornby ruled that the law is constitutional and does not amount to discrimination against religious groups. The ordinance requires organizations that receive federal grants through the city to offer employees with same-sex and unmarried heterosexual partners identical benefits to those offered married workers.
The decision argues that ... allowing different-sex couples to enter into a relationship very similar to that of marriage duplicates the institution of marriage, and thus contradicts the special protection of marriage enshrined in the Constitution," said Tamas Dombos of Hungary's Hatter Support...
WASHINGTON - The Supreme Court will hear oral arguments Wednesday in a Washington state case in which religious conservatives fear retaliation from gay rights groups if the names of the 138,000 people who signed ballot petitions to overturn a same-sex domestic partnership law are released. State officials say the Washington Public Disclosure Act, approved by voters nearly 40 years ago, requires the release of signatures on initiative and referenda petitions. Until now, no one had ever challenged their release.
A COUPLE of hours after the news broke last week that the State Senate had approved a measure to allow gay couples to enter into legally sanctioned domestic partnerships, the telephone rang here in the news room. At the other end was a very angry woman speaking very loudly. They're doing the wrong thing in this state," said Ellen Levin of North Bergen. "It's ridiculous that New Jersey thinks it can do what God says it can't do - grant two women the same rights that my husband and I had. A marriage is a man and a woman. What's so hard to understand?
