When a relationship between unmarried domestic partners sours, it can have all the dynamics of a divorce - from the question of who stays and who goes from the joint residence to those inexplicable fights about personal property of minimal value.
Minneapolis attorney Rebecca Heltzer said that she is amazed at what happens when people dissolve their relationships. You would think that people would fight about the house - but we're talking about apple peelers and sheets, she observed. This sometimes trips up resolution at the end. Heltzer said these minor skirmishes with potentially major consequences demonstrate the importance of having a domestic partnership agreement.
