The local chapter of a statewide civil rights organization wants domestic partners to have easier access to health benefits in Topeka. And it is asking the city council to make that happen by the end of the year.
From the steps of the Shawnee County Courthouse on Monday evening to a huddle group of media, two representatives from the Kansas Equality Coalition called upon the city council to allow domestic partners to register their relationship, effectively making it easier for partners eligible for employee health benefits. The term "domestic partner" generally applies to two unrelated, unmarried, cohabitating people, regardless of gender, who are in a relationship.
