This paper uses a longitudinal database to examine how family businesses compare with their non-family counterparts in one form of entrepreneurial activity, internationalization. It then evaluates some qualitative data to explore what elements of Lumpkin and Dess' (1996) entrepreneurial orientation - autonomy, innovativeness, risk taking, proactiveness, and competitive aggressiveness - may have been evident when family businesses internationalized. Results indicate that family firms are less likely to be internationally active compared with non-family firms. While the importance of innovativeness for international expansion is highlighted, findings suggest that unless family business managers have the freedom to act autonomously, the ability to benefit internationally from such innovati...

The "traditional" 18 - 22 year old, residential college student makes up only 16% of the students enrolled in public and private two- and four-year institutions. More than half of today's students are older and are taking classes part-time. Over a million attend for-profit institutions and millions more participate in postsecondary education experiences offered by corporate universities. Most work full or part-time, have little interest in out-of-class activities, and are very savvy about computer-based technologies. These are the "newer students" of higher education and represent the largest market segment of those who will attend college in the foreseeable future. It would seem the drastic shift in market characteristics would be accompanied by strategic shifts in university planning....

Competence management is seen as one of the most important sources for comparative strategic advantages. Especially in transformation economies like the Czech Republic, human resources have to be regarded as a key factor for current and future success of the economy. Therefore this article focuses on the external and internal drivers of change, influencing competence management and development in this country. The analysis shows that management competences are still in a building phase. Roughly 20 years after the great reforms, competence management shows first trends to increase market- and employee-orientation.

Microcredit programs have a positive socioeconomic impact on the rural female borrowers of Bangladesh. This study suggests that the microcredit programs do not help the borrowers to develop any entrepreneurial capabilities other than survival. Thus, this paper aims at identifying the factors related to the development of entrepreneurship among rural women through the microcredit programs of providers. A multivariate analysis technique (Factor Analysis) was conducted to identify the factors related to entrepreneurship development. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) was used to identify the relationship between microcredit programs and the development of rural female entrepreneurship in Bangladesh. Results show that financial management skills are the most important factor and have a sign...

Mergers and acquisitions (M&As) are increasingly becoming a strategy of choice for companies attempting to achieve and sustain competitive advantage. However, not all M&As are a success. In this paper, we examine the three main reasons highlighted in the literature as major causes of M&A failure (clashing corporate cultures, absence of clear communication, and employee involvement) in three Indian pharmaceutical companies, and we analyze the role played by the HR function in addressing them. Also, we discuss the importance of gaining the commitment and focus of the workforce during the acquisition process through employee involvement.
