American Airlines canceled 21 domestic flights that use MD-80 jetliners at Los Angeles International Airport on Wednesday amid concerns raised about wiring in the planes' wheel well. Ten departing flights and 11 arrivals at LAX were scrubbed by the airline, which grounded nearly all of its 300 Boeing MD-80 airplanes because the Federal Aviation Administration has questioned "how a certain bundle of wires" was secured to the aircraft, according to airline officials.

WASHINGTON - A quarter of domestic flights failed to arrive on time in 2007 - the industry's second poorest performance on record - and analysts say it is likely to get worse.

The air travel logjam, reported Tuesday by the Department of Transportation, comes as a growing number of air traffic controllers near retirement age - a trend the controllers' union says will magnify the problem.

Russian authorities were tightening travel security nationwide after Tuesday's double plane crash, even though no terror link has yet been found, while the country's airports and airlines insisted their measures already were up to international standards.
