In 1085, William the Conqueror, the first Norman king of England, ordered a complete survey of his realm. The results of the survey were recorded in a monumental work known as the Domesday Book. The original volumes of the Domesday Book (Little Domesday and Great Domesday) are on public view as part of the museum of the British National Archives at Kew in London. However, since Aug 4, 2006, the Domesday Book is now available online as well. LONDON - The Middle Ages met the Internet age Friday when the Domesday Book - a survey of England conducted almost 1,000 years ago - went online. The book, a record of the people and lands ruled by William the Conqueror, is the oldest record held by Britain's National Archives and one of the country's most valuable documents. Now anyone with an Internet connection can - for a fee - download copies of handwritten records that provide a picture of life in the 11th century.
HIGHLAND - From the days of citrus and blacksmiths to the time when city business was conducted in a 1,200- square-foot office, local historian Bill Calvert has compiled hundreds of monochrome photographs that show more than a century's worth of change. If a picture is truly worth 1,000 words, Calvert's effort may tell more about Highland than the Domesday Book - an immense survey commissioned by William the Conqueror - told royal administrators about 11th-century England.
