I recently received a call from a man who wanted to borrow money to his consolidate bills. He had done some research and was leaning toward borrowing from his 401(k) plan. From his observation, the interest rate on his 401(k) was more favorable than the interest rate on personal loans, home equity loans, credit cards and/or a mortgage loan. He thought the idea of paying himself back made more financial sense than paying back an institutional lender. Looking at his scenario from a cursory view, one would be inclined to agree that it's a better all around deal to borrow the necessary funds from a 401(k) plan when considering a competitive interest rate and the fact that repayment of the loan will directed back to the 401(k).
