Komonchak discusses Pope Benedict XVI's theological vision, starting from his Tubingen experience, as a theologian at the Second Vatican Council, as prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine f the Faith, until his election to the papacy. Among others, he highlights that Benedict far preferred Augustine's personalism in all its passion and form, and the notion of revelation in St. Bonaventure, compared to scholasticism, while at the Second Vatican Council, he located himself along with theologians of ressourcement that included Henri de Lubac and Jean Danielou. For this background, he wanted the church again to be able to pose a real alternative, and a set of meanings and values that can stand at a critical and redemptive distance from contemporary culture.
