One of life's greatest challenges happens when marriages aren't successful. This can be really devastating for the entire family, especially the children involved. A co-worker of mine specializes in divorce education and he shared some information on how to reduce the trauma of divorce on children.
Divorce and events related to divorce, including marital conflict and separation, are almost always very stressful events in the life of a child. In the months after the separation, children may begin to show signs of one or more of the following: anxiety; sadness; anger; aggression; uncooperative behavior; not sleeping well; and disrupted concentration at school. The length of this initial period of distress varies from child to child.

Whether a payment made by a taxpayer to a former spouse under a divorce or separation instrument constitutes deductible alimony by the payer is often controversial. To be deductible as alimony by the payer, the payment must satisfy the requirements of IRC section 71. A recent Tax Court decision involving the payment of military retirement benefits under the Uniformed Services Former Spouses' Protection Act (USFSPA) to the former spouse of a retired serviceman sheds light on the treatment of alimony payments.
