THE IMAGES and stories coming from northern Japan these days offer stark reminders of the fragility of the human condition. That is, at any moment, any one of us or those we love could be torn apart by a natural or man-made disaster. In Japan's case, it happens to be both, which is maybe why the interest in this still-unfolding drama remains both terrifying and engaging.
Method The purpose of this inquiry was to identify a consistent set of frames to determine how two U.S. newspapers visually covered the Indian Ocean tsunami and the Hurricane Katrina disasters.
