In March, one of the largest earthquakes ever recorded struck Japan. The destruction caused by the tsunami that followed cannot yet be fully calculated in terms of loss of life, property and livelihood. Could such a disaster happen here?
Many Oregon and Washington residents live in the Cascadia subduction zone, which includes a 680-mile fault that runs 50 miles off the Pacific coastline from Cape Mendocino in California to Vancouver Island in British Columbia. Historically, this area has experienced massive earthquakes.
