A $224 million industrial park will create jobs and housing in an area undamaged by the 2010 quake, but an examination shows that the developers played down labor and environmental concerns.
On the first anniversary of the Jan. 12, 2010, earthquake, in a sleepy corner of northeast Haiti far from the disaster zone, the Haitian government began evicting 366 farmers from a large, fertile tract of land to clear the way for a new industrial park.

This qualitative study, based on a series of 30 in-depth interviews and 109 economic surveys conducted with active heroin users residing in and around Detroit, Michigan, describes reported patterns of heroin use and income generation activities. In spite of lack of access to regular, legal employment, we found that many participants displayed a dedication to regular daily routine and a sense of risk management or control. These findings are discussed relative to past research on heroin addiction as well as recent research on the changing nature of employment. We argue that this sample fits somewhere in between the controlled or working addict, and the "junkie" or "righteous dope fiend" of urban lore. We draw a connection between these stable patterns of addiction and income generation a...

TOKYO - The operator of Japan's crippled nuclear plant laid out a blueprint Sunday for stopping radiation leaks and stabilizing damaged reactors within the next six to nine months as a first step toward allowing some of the tens of thousands of evacuees to return to the area.
While the government said the timeframe was realistic, those forced to flee their homes, jobs and farms were frustrated that their exile is not going to end soon. And officials acknowledge that unforeseen complications, or even another natural disaster, could set that timetable back even further.

A fund established in the wake of the Waldo Canyon fire made its first allocation of $379,000 to 10 area agencies that have provided or are continuing to provide services to people who lost homes, belongings, jobs and income because of the devastating blaze.
The Waldo Canyon Fire Assistance Fund, which is being administered by Pikes Peak United Way, has raised more than $900,000 since it was established shortly after the fire broke out June 23. An 11-member advisory committee made up of fire victims and people with experience in disaster management and fund allocation combed through 15 grant applications. Five applications were rejected because they did not have enough information, but they can be resubmitted, fund coordinator Preston Briggs said Thursday.
