Since then, [Larry Holden] has made five more films, all with evocative rides: Through His Door Up Your Stairs, Carrying Your Burden, In Your Room Out His Window, Drifter Did Escape, Tucked in His Knuckks. And without seeing them, that's all you're going to find out, because Holden won't discuss the content of his movies. What's the Granville movie about? Pressed by a reporter for the indie-film site Rogue Cinema, he replied none too seriously, "Uh, OK, OK, it's a . . . film about a cross-dressing serial killer who's saved, spiritually, by a Woody Guthrie impersonator with both a bad knee and a bad hip. How's that?
LH: No. They have this little short list they would give us, and you know a bunch of people on the list, so sometimes you wouldn't want to work with friends, or you know eno...

The very role of a board of directors in the system of corporate governance is to oversee a corporation's business and affairs, including its management, because numerous dispersed stockholders cannot effectively perform that function on their own. But if directors incurred liability for every misstep they took, or bad decision they made, it would indeed be rare to find a person willing to serve as a director. In Delaware, where the majority of US corporations are incorporated, the hallmark fiduciary duties are the duties of care and loyalty. But if Delaware corporate law is considered the national corporate law, the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002 is perhaps best described as its smash sequel. While competent, good, or best corporate practices vary from circumstance, from company to company...

I received a call from Mrs. [Alicia Antone], who said she had just been fired," [Gwen Hankerson] told members of the Elder's Council during the organization's monthly meeting at the library this week. "She was upset and so am I because it is not right for this young woman to have the legs cut out from under her for no reason. The community must take a stand because as far as I am concerned, the county could care less about AARLCC, and we have to let them know this is [our] library.
"[Bertha Henry] did meet with us, at my home," Hankerson acknowledged. "I can't reveal all that was discussed, but we have a delegation that will go before the county commission because we're concerned about this, our library."
"Ms. [Julie Hunter], associate director of Libraries and former director of AARL...

SEC Commissioner Luis Aguilar, in a speech at the 2009 Independent Director Conference, said, "I've been very vocal about a number of changes the SEC should make and about the Congressional action needed to address gaps in the SEC authority, and the actions needed to provide the SEC with the teeth and resources it needs to aggressively fulfill its mission to protect investors; maintain fair, orderly, and efficient markets; and facilitate capital formation." The legal landscape for directors is concerning on multiple levels as they face higher levels of liability resulting from the global financial crisis, increased stock-market volatility, activist shareholders, an emboldened plaintiffs' bar, active regulatory oversight and strict securities laws enforcement.

The Obama administration recently selected Richard Cordray to run the new Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB). Senate Republicans have threatened to stall the nomination until the administration and Senate Democrats agree to structural changes for the bureau.
Among those changes, they want the CFPB to fall under a five- member commission rather than a single director. Senate Democrats and the Obama administration have labeled the debate a partisan attempt to destroy the agency or stall a qualified nominee. That characterization is dead wrong. The CFPB will have jurisdiction over financial products we use every day, such as home loans, credit cards and student loans. It will enjoy unprecedented discretion in its oversight of those products and will function independently of the c...

Mark E. Hanson, Director of Sustainable Services for Appleton- based Hoffman LLC, likes to push boundaries. Since he was recruited to the company nine years ago from his role as executive director of the Energy Center of Wisconsin Inc., Madison, Hanson has pushed for higher Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design ratings, better materials and affordable prices. He splits his time between a home office in Madison and the company's headquarters, but when he's in Appleton, he's got plenty of family photos and other mementos to remind him of home.
Hoffman designed and built Holy Wisdom Monastery in Middleton, the highest-rated LEED-New Construction building in the nation. Hanson keeps a copy of the project's LEED platinum certificate at his desk as a memento.
