A National Bureau of Economic Research committee held a conference on Dec 11, 1998, in Cambridge, MA, which focused on higher education in the US. Topics discussed included estimations of the dollar amount of public higher education subsidies received by American youths and how these subsidies are distributed vis-a-vis parental and parent-child lifetime incomes. One paper presented focused on the influence of changes in indirect cost rates on the allocation across institutions of total federal research funding, direct/indirect cost funding and the number of federal grants.

There is an ongoing debate in the US about the performance of cost accounting systems. American managers tend to be dissatisfied with their own cost accounting methods, and there is widespread use of enterprise resource planning (ERP) IT systems based on German management accounting methods, so German cost accounting attracts a great deal of attention in the US. Some American managers believe that German companies provide best-practice examples because they are generally more satisfied with their systems.
