• Protests Hound Olympic Flame ; Thousands Anticipated for U.S. Leg

Anti-China demonstrators pursued the Olympic flame from London to Paris yesterday and took up positions in San Francisco ahead of tomorrow's torch relay across the Golden Gate Bridge, forcing officials in the U.S. and Europe to scramble for balance between the Olympic spirit and the right to free speech. From Washington, the State Department dispatched Diplomatic Security agents to San Francisco to help the local authorities prepare for thousands of protesters expected for the six-mile run - the flame's only U.S. appearance during its 85,000 mile journey from Greece to the opening ceremony in Beijing this summer.

• Arms Dealer Bout Gets Boot in Thai Court ; Lawsuit Cited Dea Arrest Role

A Thai criminal court dismissed Monday a claim by international arms dealer Viktor Bout, the so-called "Merchant of Death," that his March 2008 arrest by Royal Thai Police in Bangkok was illegal because a U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) agent assisted in the apprehension. The court tossed out a lawsuit by Mr. Bout, who is accused in the U.S. of selling weapons to Marxist rebels in Colombia to kill Americans, because the whereabouts of the agent is unknown. Earlier this year, the same court rejected a similar challenge by Mr. Bout against two other DEA agents on the grounds that they were U.S. Embassy staff and had diplomatic immunity.
