Recent guidance from the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission may be in tension with a new opinion from the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals regarding an employer's duties under the Americans with Disabilities Act and an applicant's or employee's ability to meet minimum educational requirements for a job. Savvy employers know already that the ADA generally touches all aspects of the employment relationship, from hiring to training to advancement. NEW YORK, March 15, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Nearly one million "middle-skill" job openings--positions that require more than a high school diploma, but less than a four-year degree--are projected for the state by 2018, concludes a new study released today by National Skills Coalition in partnership with the New York City Department of Small Business Services and the New York Association of Training and Employment Professionals. But to reap the full economic benefits of these openings, New York will need to expand investment in proper training and education for its workforce to make sure residents are ready for those jobs. Though the recession has slowed current employment growth, the report projects that middle-skill jobs (including new jobs and replacement) would account for nearly 40 per...
Students at risk of dropping out could have new ways to earn a high school diploma or a GED diploma if state Board of Education members approve changes this summer. Debra Kimbler, state GED administrator, said the "very significant changes" introduce two new paths to reaching a high school diploma and one new path to a General Educational Development diploma. In all three cases, the students are expected to stay enrolled in school until they finish.
