The surge in prices means railroads that run diesel locomotives must pay more, but those higher fuel costs also mean more people are staying closer to home for vacations, said Cindy Butler, acting executive director of the West Virginia Rail Authority.
Against the backdrop of the region's busy twin ports, Los Angeles and Long Beach officials joined with Pacific Harbor Line executives this morning to roll out the first eco-friendly, clean diesel locomotives to serve one of the nation's major cargo gateways. The $23 million public-private partnership was hailed as yet another milestone in growing the ports "green" under the Clean Port Action Plan, approved by both ports last year.
MILWAUKEE - In the dormitory car of the Empire Builder, Conductor Jim Brando shuffles through the ticket stubs, sorting them by destination and checking them against his manifest as the train zips through the Wisconsin countryside. Diesel-electric locomotives long ago replaced steam engines, and modern trains offer plenty of luxury accommodations for those who can afford them, but onboard the Seattle-Chicago Empire Builder, rail travel still is an adventure. [...] highways and air traffic always have benefited from substantial subsidies, rail advocates argue, and more funding is exactly what's needed to make trains competitive.\n The other 12 crew members work six days at a time - three to Seattle, another three back - often starting their days at 5:30 a.m. and finishing after 11 p.m....
WHAT'S NEW: NJ Transit has retrofitted six of 32 diesel locomotives targeted to receive special starters so the engines can be turned on more easily, eliminating the need to keep them idling overnight in rail yards. Unlike cars, diesel locomotives are hard to start, especially in cold weather, so they often are left idling. That wastes fuel and sends carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxide and particulates into the air, which has been linked to asthma, heart disease, cancer and other health issues.
Unlike light rail, which uses overhead electrical lines, commuter-rail trains are pulled by diesel-powered locomotives. Although they are slower to start and stop, they cost less to operate. They can also run on existing rail lines, meaning that cities can often avoid spending billions on new track; they just buy passenger cars and build new stations, and they're off and running. Cheyenne, 95 miles north of Denver along Interstate 25, also wants to be part of the discussion. "From our perspective, Cheyenne is part of the Front Range," says Randy Burns, executive director of Cheyenne Leads, an economic development group. A commuter rail line would enhance the considerable economic ties between the cities. "Denver is the economic center of gravity for the Intermountain West," Burns s...
