This notice announces that EPA has granted certain diesel vehicle and engine manufacturers' requests for approval of emission- related maintenance and scheduled maintenance intervals for replenishment of reducing agent in connection with their use of selective catalytic reduction (SCR) technologies. EPA's approval pertains to the use of SCR with 2011 and later model year (MY) diesel- fueled light-duty vehicles and light-duty trucks along with medium-duty passenger vehicles and chassis-certified diesel vehicles up to 14,000 pounds gross vehicle weight (GVW) and 2012 and later MY heavy-duty diesel engines.

QUESTION: Why doesn't the city tune up its buses? They pour out black smoke whenever they start from a stop. A well-tuned diesel engine does not do this. They are wasting a lot of fuel by not having proper maintenance.
ANSWER: Bruce Beyerl, service manager for the Rockford Diesel Injection Services, verified that the dark exhaust is an indicator of wasted fuel.

Dear Car Fix: I test-drove a VW Jetta TDI and it was a nice ride. I am wondering if it will be difficult to get diesel fuel. Do you think there will be more or fewer gas stations selling diesel? I like the mileage and the turbo function. If I'm understanding the material I have read, the engine should last longer and be more fuel-efficient and more reliable. Am I missing something? -- P.T., Amherst
Dear P.T.: Finding fuel for a diesel vehicle doesn't require desperate excursions to the truck stop on the edge of town. It only requires a little careful attention to which of your neighborhood filling stations offer diesel. Nearly half of the 180,000 gas stations in the United States offer diesel.

Republic Locomotive Works Inc. - Modems & Muxes
Republic Locomotive Works Inc uses cellular technology to provide remote diagnostics for its RD20 model diesel electric locomotives. The 2,000-horsepower Detroit Diesel engines in the locomotives use a Detroit Diesel Electronic Control (DDEC) microprocessor to reduce maintenance costs and fuel consumption, control emission, improve engine protection and provide advanced diagnostics. This is the most advanced locomotive engine control system available, but a cellular system designed by Advanced Cellular Communications further improves its capabilities by enabling remote diagnostics that enable the engine to be monitored or diagnosed from afar. The control system includes a ZyXel cellular modem that provides programmers with access to the l...
