Dear Car Fix: What is your take on diesel vs. gas engines in vehicles today? Diesel fuel mileage is better, longevity of the diesel engine is better, pollution is reduced. Why is it just the Germans bringing diesel to the market? BMW, MB, VW/Audi all have highly fuel-efficient diesels in small cars, wagons, sedans and sport utility vehicles. U.S. manufacturers have to look past 3/4-ton trucks and start introducing diesels into the lighter duty trucks and even into larger sedans and/or small cars. Everyone thinks ethanol is the answer to the energy crisis. Electric hybrids aren't the answer either. Just wondering where you stand.

It has been seven months since the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission ended mechanical inspections for cars, and I still haven't received a complaint from anyone who's upset for being deprived of this chore. But there has been confusion, mostly among owners of vehicles with diesel engines, which -- unlike gas-powered cars -- are exempt even from emissions inspection. EPA is taking direct final action to simplify an existing provision in our marine diesel engine program that is intended to encourage owners of Great Lakes steamships to repower those steamships with cleaner marine diesel engines. The simplified program will automatically permit the use of residual fuel, through December 31, 2025, in a steamship if it has been repowered with a certified Tier 2 or later marine diesel engine, provided the steamship was operated exclusively on the Great Lakes and was in service on October 30, 2009. Steamships are powered by old, inefficient steam boilers.
