Risk managers have their own ratio to compare the risks of two projects, changes in risk over time, and the risk of one company to another. This ratio is the coefficient of variation. It is the ratio of standard deviation relative to the mean. The objective definition of risk incorporates all three key variables for risk managers: expected outcome, variance and time. Performance is invariant with respect to whether funds have 12b-1 fees.
