In the years after the Civil War, Missouri artist George Caleb Bingham traveled to Ohio to make sure voters there knew about the cruelty inflicted on residents of western Missouri by Union Gen. Thomas Ewing. He took his painting "Martial Law or Order No. 11," depicting the death and destruction of homes and crops under Ewing's Aug. 25, 1863, directive that everyone living in Jackson, Cass, Bates and northern Vernon counties leave unless they could prove loyalty to the Union.

Carol Berkin begins her compact and informative "Revolutionary Mothers: Women in the Struggle for America's Independence" by noting that "for many Americans the Revolution is their last great romance with war."
