Despite the perception in some quarters that cartoons constitute an important medium for framing social issues, they are often dismissed on the grounds of political absurdity and ideological insignificance. Cartoons are seen as offering just "passing chuckles" rather than any "deep reflection" on social issues. The perception may be related to the cartoon's discursive spatial limitation and its very nature as a visual mode of communication. Visual modes of communication are deemed deficient in performing analytical communication. By grounding cartoons within a theory of visual semiotics and visual persuasion, this paper attempts to address some of the concerns raised about the effectiveness of editorial cartoons. It attempts to find out how cartoons, as uniquely visual forms of communic...

In this, the fifth of six articles, methods of finding legal materials by topic other than through the use of secondary sources are introduced. The article begins by examining the basic search strategies used when seeking legal information, then discusses how to apply these strategies when looking for legal information online or when using traditional paper legal resources. Specific attention is given to searching the Internet for cases, regulations, and statutes; using annotated codes; and finding case law using digests.

This paper reviews the evolution of measurement and evaluation in libraries from the perspectives of three important figures who have shaped the history of library assessment activities: James Gerould, F. Wilfrid Lancaster, and Duane Webster. Although Lancaster is about a decade older than Webster and almost half a century removed from Gerould, the contributions of the three individuals knit a common fabric in the development of assessment in libraries in the past century. In investigating the interconnections of the three individuals, not only can we gain an understanding of how we got to today's world of evaluation in libraries, but also we can gain a glimpse into future developments in the field. James Gerould was a library administrator, Lancaster was a library educator, and Webster...

This research was designed to evaluate ethnocentrism among college business students in a public U.S. university. Subjects were asked to complete a modified Descriptive Index instrument (Schein 1973, 1975) that asked them to describe American managers, British managers, Chinese managers, Indian managers, post Olympic Chinese managers, and managers in general. Significant similarities in subjects' perceptions were found between American managers and managers in each of the other groups. When dyads were compared, significant differences were found in subjects' perceptions of managers in general and American managers and managers in general and Chinese, Indian, and post Olympic Chinese managers. The results suggest that student's ethnocentrism may be an impediment in students' careers as t...
