Descriptive studies of Internet purchasers profile the average purchaser as a resident of metropolitan area. While concepts such as "digital divide" have been used to explain the lack of Internet transactions in non-metro areas, little or no research has explored the relevance of product-specific variables in explaining Internet transactions. This research attempts to bridge this gap. Specifically, the "FCB grid" is used to analyze Internet purchases in non-metro Illinois. Based on these analyses, implications for both virtual and brick-and-mortar businesses in non-metro regions are discussed. A key finding is that Internet transactions predominantly deal with "functional" products and speed of Internet connection doesn't influence residents' quality of life perceptions.

Students react to two basic things when they are asked to rate a college course. Their ratings will reflect a certain response to the course content and to the method in which that content was delivered by a faculty person. We should expect that the resulting opinion of the teacher exists somewhat independent of the value that students perceive in the content of the courses that are taught. This paper defines this difference as a teacher's instructional value-added. That some teachers are more successful than others in impressing students is difficult to deny. However, little is known about the nature of this increment. Using data from one school, the paper shows how instructional value-added perceived by students is distributed by discipline, by level, and by individual. Separate resul...

We examine strategic alliances in an attempt to explain the increase in their use and the statistically significant increase in announcement day abnormal returns evident. Of the 10,141 strategic alliances we examine between 1983 and 2004, on average there is a statistically significant positive market response consistent with earlier research. Despite their increased use and positive announcement response, evidence suggests that approximately half of all strategic alliances result in negative shareholder wealth effects, perhaps portending impending alliance failure. Our research helps to differentiate those strategic alliances that are viewed favorably by the market from those that are not.
