Sometimes people who seek assistance from the state workers' compensation system aren't entirely forthcoming when describing their disabilities, Carl Reed has found. He confirms that type of lie about twice a month on average.
If [Bob Ney] has the most to lose, [Ralph Reed] has the least to gain from his long, close relationship with [Jack Abramoff]. After leaving the executive director's job at Pat Robertson's Christian organization, Reed wrote Abramoff to ask for help in "humping" corporate accounts. Reed was instantly humping Indian tribes, as Abramoff paid Reed's firm to direct anti-gambling campaigns designed to preserve regional Indian gaming monopolies. (Reed says he didn't know the source of the money.) The millions Abramoff paid Reed was good for business but bad for electoral politics. Reed is starting his first campaign for public office, as a candidate for lieutenant governor in the Georgia Republican Primary. The [John McCain] hearing, and the flood of internal e-mails it has released, comes at a...

In the U.S. Senate, only one-third of the members stand for election every two years; the rest carry over from one congressional term to the next. In this regard the Senate differs from the House of Representatives, where all members stand for election every two-year cycle. That much is familiar, but what legal consequences flow from this structural difference? According to some legislators, courts, and commentators, this difference is very important in that it makes the Senate, but not the House, a “continuing body.” The continuing-body idea is invoked to defend highly controversial aspects of Senate practice. WASHINGTON -- Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates said Friday that he would move swiftly to improve conditions for wounded soldiers being treated as outpatients at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, and he warned that senior officials would be held accountable for the poor conditions. Gates, speaking to reporters after touring the facilities and speaking to several patients, said he was upset by reports in The Washington Post describing wounded soldiers living in dilapidated buildings near the Walter Reed campus and portraying the massive paperwork and other bureaucratic hurdles they had to overcome during treatment.
'How can we hate each other so much that we can hurt each other this badly? Lynne Radke of Vancouver didn't really expect an answer. It wasn't so much a question as a lament. She was describing the first time she and her husband, David, visited their son, Brian, at Walter Reed Medical Center in Washington, D.C.
