Wilma Ann Elizabeth Fisher Rose, 102, of Wytheville, died August 19, 2010, at Carrington Place Health facility. Born on July 3, 1908, in the Piney area of Wythe County, Wilma was the loving wife of Ellis P. Rose for 60 years until his death on August 7, 1990. Ellis and Wilma had seven sons, Homer, Andrew, Edward, Franklin, A. C., Delmar, and Van. She attended the Piney Mission from early childhood until 1917, when she joined the Saint Paul Pentecostal Holiness Church of Piney, where she has been a charter member for life. She devoted her life to faith, hope and charity through her fellowship in her church, her care for her family, and her shared joy with a wide circle of friends she called her "Angel Friends." I CAN'T pinpoint the exact year, but sometime during my recent baseball-watching lifetime I noticed that Derek Jeter and Pete Rose were remarkably similar players, at least in terms of offensive production, at similar points in their careers, and I wondered if Jeter could make a run at Rose's all-time hits record. It might have been after the 2000 season, a season in which Jeter, at age 26, reached 1,000 hits for his career. He ended that year with 1,008.
Memphis coach John Calipari lost to Kansas in the 2008 national championship game -- largely because the Tigers couldn't shoot straight from the free-throw line -- and lost three starters off that talented team, including All-American guard Derek Rose. Yet one year later, the Tigers (31-3) are poised for another Final Four run with a team that is younger but still quite talented, armed with the nation's longest winning streak at 25 games and hacked off to be seeded No. 2 in the West behind Connecticut.

Two of Ceciliaville Athletic Center's mantras are: "Get Exposure ... or Get Exposed" and "Ceciliaville - Where Champions Are Made, Not Born. This past summer, I moseyed on down to the gym that has appropriately been named the Sam Washington Gymnasium. On display were Jermaine Jackson, Brandon Jenkins, Chris Webber, Arthur Johnson, Voshon Lenard, Jalen Rose, Lindsey Hunter, "Mo" Taylor, "Tractor" Traylor, Derek Dial, Don Reid, Ira Newble and Doug Smith. I'll always have love for St. Cecilia," Webber said. "I have so many fond memories of this building. As a young player coming up, I could not wait until I got a chance to play at Ceciliaville." Once Sam Sr. was able to get the football program in the CYO (Catholic Youth Organization) League, he recognized that the Brewster Center's lege...
We stood at the entrance of the Precipice Trail on Oct 17 on Mount Desert Island. The gates were wide open. Past the stone steps and a stretch of colorful woodland, the sheer Precipice Cliff rose into the sunny sky. Here we go," I said to Derek as I moved the strap of my camera bag across my chest and stepped past the trailhead sign.

The team everyone came to see was Jalen Rose's collection of former and current NBA professionals. He fielded a squad of Lindsey Hunter, Mo Taylor, Robert "Tractor" Traylor, Derek Dial, Don Reid, Ira Newbie and Doug Smith. Of course, Rose's team won the title. Sam Washington Jr., who came from the Cubs with his dad like I did, called me and made sure I found my way back to "The Little Big House." He reminded me that he and I played in the first "Soul Bowl" where the Cubs played the Beacons at Hamburg Field. This building has endured," Sam Jr. said, "because the vision our dads had of giving young people a place to express themselves through, first football, and now basketball, is real. We were blessed to have dads that got us involved in sports. They used sports to develop men and char...
NEW YORK As Derek Jeter came to bat in the sixth inning, a sellout crowd rose to its feet and filled Yankee Stadium's ancient rafters with sound. They cheered. They chanted. And they pleaded to the Yankee captain: Save our season.
