In 1976, Misha Mengelberg, Willem Breuker and [Han Bennink] founded the Instant Composer's Pool, a nonprofit organization that promoted Dutch avant-garde jazz. Over the years he's produced work with the ICP Orchestra as well as with Peter Brotzmann, Derek Bailey, Don Cherry and others on the jazz edge. Bennink is infamous for his wild playing, which often makes as much use of the stage, random inanimate objects and his own body as it does a traditional drum kit. At one gig [Arnie Malina] watched as Bennink took off mid-set and walked into the bathroom, where he could be heard drumming on the fixtures and pipes. "You never know what's going to happen," Malina adds. Bennink will lead two lectures, on June 11 and 12, and a percussion workshop on the 12th.

DEREK BAILEY: He's like one of my greatest musical mentors. I still feel bad about his death. He's a really great man. He made a lot of time for younger people, in a way that a lot of well-known musicians or people that are well-known in the arts, a lot of them wouldn't understand the kindness of a guy like that or how in touch he was with what younger musicians were doing all the time. 1 sent him the first recording I put out on my own in like 1975.1 was living in Canada, and he wrote me back and he helped me do some gigs in London the first time I came over there, which was-right away-a very generous use of his time. Over the years, one of the things that was really unique about him was that he really just liked to play. There's a lot of people who won't play if there's not a gig of s...

Kanawha Circuit Judge Jennifer Bailey cited Derek Skylar Brown's past criminal history, which began when he was a juvenile. She called his childhood history "a shame" and said she would like to see his family pattern of incarceration end.

* Though it features improvised music, "Josh's Show," Thursday nights on Carnegie Mêlions WRCT 88.3, isn't the kind of jamming that goes on in hippie bands or jazz lounges, mind you. Rather, it's the more esoteric "Wire-level" stuff, more along the lines of Derek Bailey and Peter Brötzmann.
* The musicians on [Josh Beyer]'s program aren't broadcast live - unlike the long-running Advanced Calculus and Does Your Hometown Really Care? radio shows - but he sees advantages to pre-recorded material. "There isn't the pressure of filling up a whole hour, where if you mess up, everyone's going to hear you," he says. "You're going to hear a session where everything is set up and sounds good before we're taping. The way it's going, people tend to do about three short pieces, with most of them swit...

Recorded live at Tokyo's Pit Inn (along with a Japan-only companion disc, Oyobare/Tetrodotaxin, again featuring Sakata), Mimidokdesuka's three tracks are straight free jazz, despite O'Rourke's occasional drones and Derek Bailey deconstructions.

Proto-Paik" is a careful exercise in bluesy fingerpicking underpinned by an occasionally ominous drone, while "Condo "60" is a subdued free-improv workout: As guests squonk like John Zorn and drone like Phill Niblock, Bernabo plinks out meticulous, clean lines, much like his recently deceased avant-guitar hero, Derek Bailey.
