  • This week, Gov. Andrew Cuomo's told the Department of Homeland Security that New York will suspend its participation in the federal Secure Communities program. Pursuant to the program, DHS used the fingerprint records of arrested individuals in county jails, including those in Monroe, Ontario and Wayne counties, to find and potentially seek deportation of illegal immigrants who commit serious crimes.

  • Despite an announcement Wednesday by Gov. Andrew Cuomo that New York would no longer be participating in the federal Secure Communities program that facilitates the deportation of illegal immigrants convicted of crimes, Suffolk County officials have stated they will continue its own Secure Communities order. The governor's announcement came after a monthly statistics report by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement showed that the program was deporting some illegal immigrants without criminal records along with those convicted of crimes.

  • Ruben Navarrette's recent column "Latino support for Obama appears to be plunging" really struck a chord in me when he spoke about Obama who may think "immigration hurts United States workers and it is (Obama's) responsibility to protect American jobs," in regard to the increased deportation of illegal immigrants. In the next paragraph, Navarrette said, "This kind of protection is misguided. You don't help people by shielding them from competition, you only make them soft and foster a sense of entitlement. This twisted view of illegal immigrants crossing the border with no official representative knowing who they are and taking a taxpaying American job for a reduced wage and not paying taxes may be Navarrette's idea of competition, but it is not to any American who lost his job to an i...

  • Administration officials are beginning to ratchet up the pressure on Congress to pass controversial immigration-reform measures, but critics fear the changes are already being made without lawmakers' consent. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan told reporters on Monday the nation "desperately" needs to enact the Dream Act, which would prevent the deportation of illegal immigrants who are studying at American colleges and universities or have served at least two years in the military.

  • Today, the Deseret News offers the last installment of the three- part series on the deportation of illegal immigrants. The stories are told through the eyes of those most affected by deportation -- the Immigration Customs and Enforcement officers who arrest illegal immigrants, convicted criminals and otherwise; attorneys who represent them in court; the detainees themselves, as well as their families, who face uncertain futures once their loved ones are deported.

  • If there was ever any doubt that the only thing President Obama is truly gifted at is getting people to hope for change, we need look no further than his recent announcement to review the cases of up to 300,000 illegal immigrants facing deportation. Too bad it's false hope.

  • WASHINGTON - The Obama administration said Thursday that it will allow many illegal immigrants facing deportation the chance to stay in the U.S. and apply for a work permit, while focusing on removing from the U.S. convicted criminals and those who might be a national security or public safety threat. That will mean a case-by-case review of about 300,000 illegal immigrants facing possible deportation in federal immigration courts, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said in announcing the policy change.

  • WASHINGTON, Jan. 10, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- ICE employees have formally requested that President Barack Obama personally intervene to clarify statements by DHS and ICE officials in a January 7, 2012, article in the New York Times titled, Agents' Union Stalls Training on Deportation Rules in which ICE and DHS officials blame their own employees for delaying new Administration policies that could suspend deportation for tens of thousands of illegal immigrants. DHS and ICE told 11 million desperate illegal immigrants and their families and friends that ICE employees are responsible for stopping polices that could prevent their deportation. It's an absolute lie. ICE and DHS need to set the record straight before our employees are injured," said Chris Crane, President of the Union ...

  • Arizona's new immigration law may have been aimed at deporting as many illegal immigrants as possible, but an ironic side effect will allow more undocumented residents to apply for temporary work visas and permanent U.S. citizenship, according to research by the Arizona Capitol Times. The new law will add to a processing backlog that already has caused federal authorities to release an increasing number of illegal immigrants back into the U.S. to await deportation hearings. And if nationwide figures can be applied to Arizona, one in four of those who are released from federal custody fail to appear in court.
