Psychological and health science research has identified a disparate experience of body image dissatisfaction among gay men (particularly in relation to heterosexual men), and have theorised that this reflects an emphasis placed on physical appearance in gay male settings. However, these studies largely fail to reflect upon the centrality of the body in securing a visible gay identity, or upon discourses of the nature, appearance and expression of gay identity in a historical and social context. Similarly, sociologically informed work has tended to emphasise gay men's paradoxical relationship-dependant upon and desirous of-heterosexual masculinity as the foundation for this emphasis. It's amazing what a little spit and polish can do.
Take downtown Tulsa's conglomeration of four run-on structures collectively called the Mathews Warehouse Complex, 110 to 124 E. Brady St. While the exterior's chipped bricks, boarded-up windows, and faded paint signs deliver a fairly universal message of age and neglect, the interior's stripped-down concrete floors and thick, square support beams suggest both wide-open opportunity and bonelike resilience to change. The sheer expanse heightens that sense of stability, seeming bigger on the inside than out, but that comes with a deepening sense of mystery and antiquity, your visibility dependant on shifting gray beams of light cast through what cracked glass portals survive.
