Car wash season is near, and the Environmental Stewardship Advisory Commission is asking fundraising organizers and the Dubuque City Council to consider cleaning up the impact on water quality.
Rarely enforced, most weekend fundraisers are in violation of the Clean Water Act and water-discharge standards, said Bill Ehm, of the Iowa Department of Natural Resources' Water Quality Bureau. The soap, scum and debris washing into the storm sewer does affect water quality.

River cleanup set for June 10
The 10th-annual Stillwater River Cleanup is scheduled for June 10. The event will be along the Stillwater State Scenic River between Aullwood and Dogleg Road. The Stillwater Watershed Project, Darke, Miami, and Montgomery Soil and Water Conservation districts, Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Scenic Rivers Program, Darke and Miami County parks district, Brukner Nature Center, Ohio EPA, Veolia Water, New Tech Plastics, Inc., McDonald's and others are participating.

BLOOMINGTON - An aborted request to change zoning rules regarding drilling for natural gas and oil in McLean County fueled local debate over a controversial method of natural gas drilling that critics say has harmed water supplies in other states.
Illinois lawmakers and the Department of Natural Resources recently began discussions on ways to regulate hydraulic fragmenting, known as fracking. Its use is expanding for natural gas exploration.
