DETROIT, May 2, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- SeaTac Steel Mill and Recycling Services, a subsidiary of the Edw. C. Levy Co., of Detroit, is the first slag processor in the steel industry that has been approved for participation in the Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) which recognizes a commitment to safety and (WSDLI).
VPP is a program of the federal Occupation Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) but in Washington State is administered by the Department of Labor and Industries. To participate in VPP companies must have an excellent safety record.

COHE, a pilot project funded by the Washington state Department of Labor and Industries, seeks to reduce injured workers' disability and get them back to work more quickly by improving the quality of their care and coordinating that care more efficiently. A research team at the University of Washington, which is part of the pilot project, released a report in March that evaluates COHE's effects on disability and medical care costs three and four years after an injured worker initially made claims.
