  • Employers have a right to be frustrated. Even the most law- abiding ones run into snags trying to figure out what the government wants them to do about verifying employment eligibility. It's hard enough to determine the correct agencies. Ensuring employment eligibility and related verification obligations are the jobs of the Department of Homeland Security's U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). The folks there don't care much about money, taxes and Social Security. Their job is to enforce the immigration laws that make employers responsible for verifying their employees are who they say they are and have the right to work in this country.

  • WASHINGTON -- More than 40 percent of Homeland Security Department employees aren't happy with their jobs. An internal survey of about 141,000 of the department's 208,000 employees found that only 58 percent were satisfied with their jobs, the same as results from a 2006 survey that measured job satisfaction across the government. The department ranked at the bottom in the 2006 poll, conducted by the Office of Personnel Management.

  • Every gun fired by drug traffickers dealing death in Mexico is one that might as well be aimed at the heart of U.S. well-being. As the Homeland Security Department has acted as if illegal immigrants doing U.S. jobs represented the dire threat, Mexico bravely has launched a campaign against the drug violence that has claimed more than 8,000 lives since President Felipe Calderon assumed office in December 2006. More than 5,000 have died in 2008 alone.

  • House Democrats claim they can better protect the nation's chemical facilities from terrorist attacks by allowing government bureaucrats and trial lawyers to have a say not only in what chemicals U.S. companies produce, but how they secure them. The plan would be comical if it weren't so misguided. Not only would it undermine plant security while potentially causing pharmaceutical and other product shortages, it could cost jobs. The House approved legislation last week granting the Department of Homeland Security the authority to tell private companies whether the chemicals they store, use or process are safe enough and whether they must be replaced by government-approved alternatives. The measure also would give private persons the right to sue the Department of Homeland Security for p...

This declaration describes a perimeter approach to security in which the United States and Canada share responsibility for the security and resilience of our nations. • It's often said that if the U.S. wants to get serious about immigration, it should forget about the border and go after the businesses that hire illegal workers. So long as immigrants have an incentive to break the law they'll find ways to cross the border in search of jobs. The new online system being developed by the Department of Homeland Security is a good idea, giving businesses a quick and easy way to search an applicant's work status. But are companies really going to use it?

  • GINGRICH RESILIENCE He's issued solutions to save America from a rotten economy, energy challenges and weird health care. He's dogged his way through Iowa and New Hampshire. He survived what a gleeful press framed as a "mass exodus" of key staffers. Does presidential hopeful Newt Gingrich deserve "a second look for 2012?" National Review pitched the question; more than 7,000 of its readers responded. Alas, 88 percent say Mr. Gingrich does not warrant that precious re- examination.
