Recent policy changes by the Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) are eliciting mixed reactions from military families.
In April, DoDEA announced it would evaluate staffing needs within its kindergarten and middle-school programs for the 2009-10 and 2010- 11 school years that begin in August and end in June.

Widefield School District 3 has been awarded a $2 million grant to focus on early literacy programs.
Under the Department of Defense Education Activity grant, which begins in October, the district will receive $675,000 a year for three years to create literacy programs for students from pre- kindergarten through fifth grade.

Recently, two school districts received federal grants from the Defense Department to help them deal with growth in enrollment resulting from the expansion of Fort Lee.
The Hopewell City Public School District will receive $300,000 and the Prince George County Public School District will receive $308,000. The grants, from the Department of Defense Education Activity Educational Partnership, are based on the number of military-connected students in each school district.
