If emissions are to be reduced and better fuel economy achieved, then it has to be recognized that the automobile is not going to achieve the best results all by itself, as it is but one piece in an interlocking jigsaw that involves other vehicles, traffic control systems, public highways, and the application of the highest level of telecommunications. A key enabling tool in this scenario is intelligent transport systems (ITS), which is becoming an emerging global market phenomenon with huge potential to benefit the public and private transport sectors. Construction is massive. From piling to capping off, from tendering to handing over the hospital keys through to maintaining the drains and polishing marble cladding, the construction industry encompasses a huge range of activities. According to figures from the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform, in 2006 the UK construction and housebuilding industry had an estimated output value of about L113.6 billion, including public sector direct work. This value reflected what is being built and is split approximately 33%/67% between public and private sector work. At present the UK Construction industry is in reasonably good health, with most larger construction groups reporting record, or near record order books, propelled by private and public sector drivers.

The year 2008 was a good year for membership numbers, which increased month on month when compared with the previous year. A contributory factor to this growth is the introduction of the ICM Diploma Pathway. In 2008, the Institute effected a major change to ICM qualifications with the launch of the ICM Diploma Pathway. The new credit-based qualifications offer significant benefits to employers and learners. ICM Training achieved yet a...

In March and April Debt Buyers and Sellers Group (DBSG) met both with the Office of Fair Trading and the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform with its colleagues in the CSA as part of the consultation on the Consumer Credit Act, and specifically the provision of statements' element of its proposals. Elsewhere, the DBSG has been actively engaging with the major credit reference agencies, all of whom have offered to help with regards compliance on SCOR. Further afield, the DBSG was recently represented at the DBA Conference in Las Vegas, forging stronger ties to share knowledge and learning. Closer to home DBSG's work continues in expanding membership, and it was delighted recently to welcome both The Royal Bank of Scotland and HSBC as full members.
