Mayor Michael W. Tucker said Friday that he wants to completely privatize the city's garbage pickup program, and he hopes a new contract with the city's blue-collar union will clear the way for that.
Dennis McNamara, president of the union, declined to comment on the contents of the contract because he hasn't presented it to the membership yet.

A former Ohio police chief was sentenced to prison Wednesday in connection with a break-in at the home of the surrogate who bore twins for Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick.
Barry Carpenter was sentenced to two years and eight months in prison for receiving stolen property, theft in office and evidence tampering. His attorney, Dennis McNamara, vowed to appeal last month's conviction.

Dennis A. McNamara will be more than an interested observer when a traveling exhibit of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall comes to town for four days beginning Aug. 16. "I have friends on that wall, guys I served with," said McNamara, a Navy veteran who served in Vietnam from 1971 to 1974 and now a member of American Legion Post 79. "I'll be working security detail there. I'll be working the computer, helping people look up names.
He said many volunteers from Madison's American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars posts will be doing the same.

CHESAPEAKE - , 81, of the 1000 block of Winchester Way, went to be with the Lord Jan. 21, 2007, in Norfolk.
She was the daughter of the late Dennis and Virgie McNamara Griffin and the wife of the late Albert L. Matcefsky. She was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church which was the love of her life and where she was a member of its choir and its Sunshine Sunday School Class. As an artist, she loved ceramic making.
