NEW YORK You meet him, you have no doubt that Dennis Farina is a tough guy. Steel-gray hair; craggy face with this-means-business mustache; husky build. Besides, you already know he's a lifelong Chicagoan and ex-cop.
And yet ... no one could be more pleasant and self-effacing as, with an almost childlike sense of wonder, he discusses his second career: that of an unlikely star.

He just happens to be a hit man from Buffalo whose drinking is getting in the way of his killing. Question: There was a show in the late '70s or early '80s that was set in the 1950s and was about a special elite police unit. Can you tell me the name of this show? Also, is it available anywhere on DVD?
Answer: That was "Crime Story," which ran on NBC from 1986 until 1988. Dennis Farina played Lt. Mike Torello, who fought crime in Las Vegas and Chicago against a background of neon, beehive hairdos, Brylcreem, fedoras, Eisenhower, Sputnik, Elvis, Ozzie and Harriet, hubcaps and anything else from the late 1950s the producers could think of.
