  • LONDON (Reuters) - Buying the Danish crown against the euro has become popular among hedge funds and other speculative investors looking to protect themselves against a break-up of the single currency, though some warn it could be a risky bet. Denmark is not in the euro zone but its central bank, the Nationalbank, intervenes to keep the crown pegged within a band against the euro. Many assume that if the euro zone broke up the Nationalbank would switch the crown's peg to a new German currency, which would probably be the euro's strongest successor.

  • TIDBITS: The weather in Copenhagen is like Chicago, but no snow. Currency in Denmark is called a "krone" [DKK], 1 American dollar equals 5 Danish krones. It's expensive to live in Copenhagen. A can of Coca-Cola is $3.50. Taxi fare: 10 blocks $28. Sales tax: 28%. Tax on a new car: 1 80% tax. Minimum wage: $20 an hour. Almost everyone rides a bike. The bicycle is the number one mode of transportation in Copenhagen. Hundreds of bicycles are parked everywhere -mostly unlocked! THE LITTLE MERMAID. One of my sightseeing highlights in Copenhagen was the Little Mermaid statue near the seashore. It's a small statue, but a landmark in Copenhagen. Author Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale of the Little Mermaid is of a young mermaid "who fell in love with a prince who lived on land, and often cam...

  • COPENHAGEN, Denmark - Danes will get a new chance to either reject or adopt the euro in a referendum in the next four years, the prime minister said Thursday. Denmark opted out of the European Union's common currency, as well as efforts to forge closer cooperation on defense policy and law enforcement, in the early 1990s. Voters rejected the euro again in a 2000 referendum.

  • Under the Maastricht Treaty of 1992, a single currency called the "euro" was adopted, and economic criteria for membership in the European Monetary Union were established. The objectives of the Maastricht Treaty were to eliminate the costs connected with several European currencies, increase both currency and international stability, and stimulate economic growth and employment with a more efficient single market and European integration. The individual Member States and the European Union as a whole would benefit with free circulation of goods, services, people, and capital among the Member States ("What is," n.d., p. 2-3). On January 1, 1999, eleven of the fifteen existing European Union (EU) Member States joined the EMU: Austria, Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Lux...

  • The turmoil in international financial market heightened in earnest in September. Several large financial institutions found themselves in difficulties and had to be saved by the authorities or be taken over by competitors. Banks' funding in money markets has to a large extent been replaced by expanded access to short-term funding in the central banks. From the last half of 2007 to end-November 2008, large banks throughout the world reported losses and write-downs on loans and securities equivalent to USD 710 bn. After large losses and write-downs, banks must restore capital adequacy levels, either by raising new equity or by reducing debt. Banks' debt can be repaid by selling assets or gradually reduced through tighter credit standards, resulting over time in a smaller loan portfolio. ...

  • GENEVA and MENLO PARK, Calif., Aug. 15, 2011 /PRNewswire- USNewswire/ -- Funding disbursements from donor governments for the AIDS response in low- and middle-income countries fell in 2010, dropping 10% from the previous year's level, according to an annual funding analysis conducted by the Kaiser Family Foundation and the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), available at http://www.kff.org/hivaids/7347.cfm. The study found that donor governments disbursed US$ 6.9 billion in 2010 for HIV prevention, treatment, care and support -- US$ 740 million less than in 2009. The decrease was due to a combination of three main factors: actual reductions in development assistance, currency exchange fluctuations, and a slowdown in the pace of U.S. disbursements, which was not a budget...
