Denise Majette has already won over perhaps the toughest critic she will face this year in her campaign to be Georgia's next U.S. senator.
Two months ago, Ms. Majette made a phone call to Brooklyn, N.Y., to inform her mother, Olivia, of her plans to give up what many considered to be a safe seat in the U.S. House. She wanted to take a shot at filling the shoes of retiring Democratic Sen. Zell Miller.

[Cynthia McKinney] didn't miss a beat and quickly stirred the controversy pot again with her well-publicized swing at a Capitol police officer, a profanity laced tirade against an aide that was caught on camera, and her drum beat attacks on [Bush] administration polices. The McKinney bashers got another chance to dump her. With much public fanfare, the Fraternal Order of Police contributed $1000 to [Hank Johnson]'s campaign, and implored police groups nationally to pour money into his campaign. The pro-Israel Washington PAC reportedly pumped $5,000 into Johnson's coffer and urged other pro-Israel PACS to contribute to him. An undetermined number of Republicans in her district stricken by rabid "anyone but McKinney" fever again may have crossed over in the primary to vote for Johnson. Bu...

When Congresswoman Denise Majette won last week's Democratic U.S. Senate nomination by fending off a wealthy challenger's $1.8 million advertising blitz, candidates in smaller races, such as Roger Boatright, were paying attention.
The former mayor of Alma in southeast Georgia's tiny Bacon County is facing his own tough election battle this fall for the state Senate District 7 seat against a deep-pocketed opponent.

Only two years ago, the Israel-first community put its money where its mouth is and, in short order, contributed a whopping $52,000 to former State Court Judge Denise Majette's successful bid to unseat Democratic Rep Cynthia McKinney. As a result, in a district in which 52% of registered voters are African-American, compared to 47% white, white voter outnumbered African-Americans by a margin of 51% to 47%. Now, former Rep McKinney seeks to regain the congressional seat for the upcoming election.

The two candidates competing in Tuesday's runoff election for the Democratic U.S. Senate nomination crisscrossed the state last week, each claiming to have the professional pedigree necessary to take on Republican nominee Johnny Isakson in November.
However, the vastly differing career paths of U.S. Rep. Denise Majette and multimillionaire entrepreneur Cliff Oxford have voters offering their own views about what kind of experience will make the better Democratic candidate in Georgia.

STONE MOUNTAIN, Ga. - Fouryears ago, U.S. Rep. Cynthia McKinney was unseated after 10 years in Congress by a little-known political newcomer from within her own party who simply campaigned on the premise that she wouldn't embarrass constituents as she claimed Ms. McKinney did.
The primary-election ouster of Georgia's first black congresswoman by Denise Majette came after some remarks by Ms. McKinney drew national attention, including accusing former Vice President Al Gore of having a "low Negro tolerance level" and questioning the Bush administration's advance knowledge of the Sept. 11 attacks.

We are confident that in November, the voters in Georgia will support Congresswoman [Denise Majette] and allow her to continue her outstanding record of service to that state," the CBC said in a statement.
CBC Chair Elijah Cummings of Maryland said that when Majette joins the Senate, she will be a "leader on the issues that matter most in people's lives and an inspiration to young women across the country.

ATLANTA - Even before the GOP romp that put Republicans in charge of the Governor's Mansion and both chambers of the General Assembly, the party had found success in the race for state schools superintendent.
And it is the cleanup from the unseemly legacy of her Republican predecessor that GOP incumbent Kathy Cox is touting as one reason voters should re-elect her over Democratic challenger and former U.S. Rep. Denise Majette and Libertarian candidate David Chastain.
