The phrase 'wall of separation between church and state,' used by Thomas Jefferson in a letter to the Danbury Baptist Association in 1802, has proved to be an influential metaphor in the longstanding debate over relations between church and state in the US. The wall metaphor was not originated by Jefferson, but had been used before by Roger Williams and by James Burgh, a Scottish writer admired by Jefferson. Jefferson's use of the wall metaphor in the Danbury letter was cited by the Supreme Court in 1878, although the metaphor has also been criticized as a misrepresentation of the First Amendment.
