WHILE THE BARISAN NASIONAL (BN) COMPONENT parties, in particular Umno, are bogged down in post-election mudslinging, their victorious opponents are continuing to push the boundaries.
On April 1, the Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party (Pas), the Democratic Action Party (DAP) and the People's Justice Party (Parti Keadilan Rakyat or PKR) announced the formation of the BN-like coalition called Pakatan Rakyat or People's Alliance.

NOW that the opposition coalition has taken the step to formalise itself, how will its members react, given their ideological and cultural differences, and how will this further affect the ruling coalition?
AFTER more than 18 months of agreeing to formalise their 2008 election pact into a formal coalition called the Pakatan Rakyat or PR (People's Alliance), the opposition Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR), the Democratic Action Party (DAP) and the Pan Malaysian Islamic Party (Pas) have finally decided on its registration.

UNASSUMING, slightly built and quick to laugh, especially when relating anecdotes about her life in politics, Teresa Kok, 42, is nothing like the oft-unsmiling woman pictured in newspapers, with grim complainants by her side. Described by those at her service centre as efficacious and dedicated, she comes across as the `girl next door', or as she puts it, `the auntie next door.'
Despite having been in the Democratic Action Party (DAP) and politics since graduating from Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) in 1990, it was only this year that Kok became the poster girl for the Opposition party, going from just another face in Parliament to an MP that the man on the street had no trouble naming, thanks to several high-profile cases, from the Independent Police Complaint and Monitoring Commissio...

ON OCT 10, 2005, Dr Tan Seng Giaw posted a piece on his blog about an issue that has been bothering him for years: import and export licences, aka Approve Permit (AP)s. The 65-year-old law- maker and Deputy Chairman of the Opposition Democratic Action Party (DAP) argued that `it is important that the government consider seriously to do away with the 50% import duty and APs for steel sheets, plates and coils, including steel materials not produced in this country.'
Tan pointed out that the government has imposed the import duty on steel coils, sheets and plates with a thickness below 30mm since April 1999. He claimed that selected companies such as Megasteel Sdn Bhd, Lion Plates and Ji Kang, Pahang have been given APs to import the steel materials. The measure has resulted in more expens...

YAKIMA, WASH. -- The state Public Disclosure Commission will hear a complaint about election reporting stemming from last February's ballot measure to switch Yakima to a strong-mayor form of government.
The complaint was filed by Ron Bonlender, a former City Council member and Democratic Party activist. He alleged the Safer Streets and Lower Taxes political action committee, which backed the strong- mayor proposal, filed late or unclear campaign reports to the PDC. He also questioned whether it was proper for strong-mayor proponent Bruce Smith to use advertising credit from his newspaper business to pay for campaign publicity.

BANGOR - State Democrat and Republican leaders are blasting each other this week for the large amount of out-of-state money that is being spent on negative advertising in local legislative races as the campaign season winds down.
The Maine Democratic Party has filed a complaint with the state alleging that an out-of-state political action committee that recently spent $400,000 to target five state Senate races violated Maine Clean Elections Law.

The media works on a timeframe of instant results. While grudgingly admitting that the George Bush administration presided over the wars, the sorry state of the economy and the home foreclosure crisis, and passed it on to [Barack Obama], they nonetheless, constantly critiche Obama's personal actions and proposals in his attempt to fix these problems. Those who come to his defense in the welter of attacks are rare, sense it appears from surveying many media outlets that most of those who are allowed the privilege of participating in the public interpretation of events are opponents of this While House. The frequency of Republican and conservative Democratic voices invited to comment on every action of the White House has been overwhelming, something the Democratic party did not experienc...
