Andy Tobin is gregarious, fiery, funny and, above all else, loyal to the core -- attributes that all led to his ascension to speaker of the Arizona House of Representatives late last month.
That last quality was on full display earlier this year when Tobin, who was then the majority leader, intervened on behalf of two House members -- one Republican and one Democrat -- to ensure a bill they had been working on cleared the Senate and landed on the governor's desk.

BILL O'Neill, Gov. M. Jodi Rell declared, was "one of the titans of Connecticut politics." Actually, O'Neill was the tavern keeper who, not entirely by accident, became governor for a long time and who departed in good grace, unlike the two petulant guys who followed him.
The obituaries are calling O'Neill a conservative, mistaking mere demeanor for policy. He was cautious. Because he did not speak well, he did not orate much. But as a matter of policy, O'Neill, a Democrat, was by far the most liberal of Connecticut's governors, eclipsing even Chester Bowles, insofar as Bowles could only posture resentfully in an ineffectual two-year term while O'Neill, in 10 years and 10 days, enacted, almost mutely, most of the liberal agenda of his time: vast state underwriting of municipal school ex...

The flood started with Erik Cook's wrinkled shirt.
Instead of an iron, the Washington Redskins' center decided to steam away the problem. So Cook hung the shirt in the bathroom of his room earlier this month at the team's hotel in National Harbor. He unleashed a stream of hot water from the shower, closed the door and turned on the television.

When Serena Williams took the court to warm up before Thursday's World TeamTennis match, it was 94 degrees outside and she was quick to acknowledge the heat. Serena said that she felt "good, but hot" before facing the Boston Lobsters.
Williams was preparing for her first match on American soil since 2009, when she faced a different type of heat after losing to Kim Clijsters in the U.S. Open semifinals. After being penalized for a foot fault that gave Clijsters a match point, Williams erupted at the match official for making a rare call at such a crucial point in the match.

It couldn't have been easy to play two varsity tennis seasons before being bumped to No. 7 singles, but Dubuque Wahlert's Claire Morton endured.
The Golden Eagles girls' team went on a fantastic run last year, Claire's junior season, piling up a 21-0 record - the team did not lose a doubles match and only dropped three singles matches all season - and an Iowa Class 1A state team title.

The press conference that cut into live network programing and was beamed into every home in Cardinal Nation was all done. So were the one-on-one television interviews, a few live hits on the radio and a quick visit with MLB Network, and now the most fascinating day of Mike Matheny's baseball life was finally slowing down.
So the newest manager of the St. Louis Cardinals walked through the frosted glass doors of the Cardinals clubhouse, took the familiar short walk down the hallway and made a quick left turn into his new office - Tony La Russa's former office.

Conversely, the administration's support of some of former President George W Bush's policies regarding executive privilege and state secrets has distressed many on the left. While it is still not clear what the Obama administration's final position will be on these issues, Obama has shown that he will occasionally surprise both supporters and detrac- tors, and that his position on any issue cannot be assumed or taken for granted. Despite the wishes of many of his supporters, he appears to be the pragmatic non-ideologue that he presented on the campaign trail.
While Obama had little concrete success during his global travels, international leaders expressed enthusiasm for his willingness to listen. His quiet diplomacy was successful in solving disputes between other countries who were p...
