Cercospora leaf spot on hydrangea appears as irregular purple or purple-rimmed spots with gray or dark centers. Severely infected leaves turn yellow and fall prematurely. It is typical for this leaf spot to start at the base of the hydrangea and spread up through the canopy. Smooth, panicle, oakleaf and bigleaf hydrangeas can be affected. The spotting caused by this fungal disease detracts from the overall appearance of the plants and is caused by frequent rains or overhead irrigation. Although it happens infrequently, if severe defoliation occurs, plant health can be compromised.
Fallen diseased leaves are the primary source of spores of the fungus Cercospora hydrangeae. The spores are spread to healthy lower leaves by splashing water and wind. Once Cercospora leaf spot has been introd...

Just in case you weren't aware of it, the Japanese beetles have been active the last few weeks. In most years, the amount of damage these beetles do to agronomic crops is tolerable, causing enough damage to get you nervous, but not enough to make it economically worth while to spray for them. In field corn, silk clipping is the main concern with these insects. Each silk on an ear of corn is attached to a kernel on the ear and is that kernel's sole chance at pollination to allow maturation. Along with rootworm adults, Japanese beetles have the potential of preventing the corn from pollinating by clipping the silk. If all the silks on an ear are continuously clipped down to within a half inch or less of the ear prior to pollination, the ear will be barren of kernels. If we get to the poin...

BELLEVUE, Iowa - State agencies in Iowa and Wisconsin will be spraying to slow the spread of gypsy moths in Jackson County, Iowa, and Grant County, Wis., early this week.
The Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship and Iowa Department of Natural Resources will be using low-flying airplanes in Jackson County on Monday, June 27, and Tuesday, June 28, to spread pheromone flakes to help slow the spread of gypsy moths, a pest that can be destructive to trees and shrubs.

The widespread partial defoliation of sycamore trees the past week or so appears to have been incited by a disease called anthracnose and is aggravated by weather conditions.
Anthracnose on sycamore trees occurs in many years during cool weather in the spring. Typically, the infection causes brown blotching along the veins of the infected leaves, and some fallen leaves do exhibit that characteristic.
