Step outside at sunset. That glorious light at the end of the day, just as the sun is dropping below the horizon, creates what photographers call the golden hour. "It's the time of day when the sun has almost set and everything glows," author and part-time Santa Fean Charles Churchward said in an email. "Usually a person will look healthiest and most radiant in that golden light." Having spent years working as a design and art director in the magazine world - for the likes of Vogue and Vanity Fair -Churchward knows his photographic terms well. But he may be most familiar with this term because of photographer Herb Ritts, who was his business associate and close friend for many years. "This was Herb's favorite time to shoot and usually when most of his work was done," he said. Perhaps, t...

The definitions that I found in Webster's Dictionary are very clear. In these definitions nowhere do you find the words "I promise," "I'm gonna," "Call my secretary," "It's not my problem," "They should be doing something," "Those kids," "That community," That school district," "That neighborhood," "I hate Detroit; that's why I'm not doing anything," etc.
It's time out for the now and later business. You know - talk about now and hope we get it later. Violence is taking place right now and later is yesterday! You can't wish change, you can't wish improvement, you can't wish that this all goes away because it's only going to get worse unless something is done immediately. I'm challenging every pastor in the city to preach a sermon on non-violence and have a revival to culminate it. Why d...

Revolutions are always unpredictable, de- pending on the way always unpredictable people adapt to them. That's true of high-tech revolutions as well as revolutions in Tunisia, Egypt, Libya and a lot of other places. Humans are curious creatures.
The revolution in communications, for example, for all of its benign access - and success - comes with social consequences that continue to surprise and occasionally alarm. Nothing seemed simpler for increasing opportunities for adults to stay in touch with their children's comings and goings than the cellphone. The cellphone that seems to grow out of the ears on every teenager's head and allows them to reach out to their friends seemed harmless enough. At first.

Don't get us wrong - by all commonly held definitions, we're not advocating anything resembling rape. But check out the first definition listed in Idaho law: "Where the female is under the age of eighteen (18) years." That leaves open not only consensual sex between two underage lovebirds, but also, thanks to Idaho's definition of "sex," any fooling around (beyond second base) that takes place between any two Idaho teens of any age. Hmmm ... makes you wonder how many of our neo-con leaders were once technically rapists in their own home state, doesn't it? Sure, such cases probably very rarely result in prosecutions, but is that justification for antiquated laws to remain on the books? (We're thinking of "fornication" and "sodomy" as well here.)
Real teenagers take heed: Just becaus...

Moyers, a former jeporter for the Addison Independent, has characterized Lathrop's approach to permitting as "catch me if you can." He says Lathrop and his team of consultants have repeatedly altered their proposal without going through the proper procedures. For example, Moyers suggests they've used elusive definitions of "crushing" and "mining." "All along, it's been a moving target," he says.
Another old-timer pointed out that Bristol has been home to Lathrop's Maple Supply for years. He dismissed opponents' fears that a big gravel-mining operation would hurt property values. Another man agreed. "I don't think property values have dropped," he said. "If anything, they've gone up." Bristol's proximity to Middlebury has made the town increasingly attractive to college professors and ot...
