  • For the study, Dr. Jared P. Reis of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and colleagues analyzed data on 3,577 adolescents, 1 2 to 1 9 years old, who participated in the nationally representative National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) conducted from 200 1 -2004. The researchers used a biomarker of vitamin D to measure levels in blood. On average, none of the teens were getting enough vitamin D, however those with the lowest levels were more than twice as likely to have high blood pressure and high blood sugar compared to those with the highest levels. They were also four times more likely to have metabolic syndrome, a cluster of cardiovascular disease and diabetes risk factors including elevated waist circumference, high blood pressure, elevated triglyc...

  • Dear Dr. Gott: I have been sick with cold and flu symptoms (on average) about 12 to 14 days each month for the past year. My family doctor referred me to a rheumatologist because she thought it might be autoimmune. The rheumatologist believes a low vitamin D level and allergies are causing my symptoms. She has put me on 50,000 IU of vitamin D for the next eight weeks and daily Claritin. Can you tell me what could be causing my low vitamin D level?

The main cause of vitamin D deficiency is lack of sunlight exposure. This can be due to increased sunscreen use or avoidance of sunlight.

  • It is interesting to note, as Dr. [Zaidi] points out in "Power of Vitamin D," that Vitamin D deficiency worsens Insulin Resistance, therefore amplifying the negative effects of Insulin Resistance on the heart. Insulin Resistance typically occurs in overweight individuals, whose Vitamin D level gets even lower due to their obesity. Vitamin D is fat soluble and gets trapped in the fat. Consequently, little Vitamin D is available for the rest of the body. Low Vitamin D then has direct negative effects on the heart. In addition, it worsens Insulin Resistance. Thus, obese individuals have the double whammy of Insulin Resistance and Vitamin D deficiency and the two reinforce each other. That's why these individuals continue to suffer from coronary events despite being on statin and aspirin th...

Indeed, five researchers at Harvard, led by Dr. Dennis Kinney, recently endorsed and then modified the vitamin D theory of autism.(2) Very recently, Dr. Darryl Eyles, of the University of Queensland, added his name to growing list of scientists who agree that vitamin D deficiency plays an important role in autism.
