Dave Lindsey has a favorite story to tell when he is asked why leadership training is important at DEFENDER Direct Inc. It's a tale of two guys whose job is to load bags of ice onto trucks. Instead of having beer and pizza and crashing on the couch every evening like Employee A, he makes sure he eats a nutritious meal and joins a gym to help him better handle the heavy lifting. From the time we hire some-one, we want it to be very clear in our materials and our culture that we attract someone that already has a burning desire for self-improvement.\n It used to be the technician manager starts writing the training program, Lindsey says.

There was no direct attempt to address recidivism or actually rehabilitate offenders. The prisons were warehouses that eventually developed into "cash cows" by the manipulative and greedy. US prisons for the most part have become predators on the general population.
Most people who enter prison are there because they could not afford to have adequate legal representation. Once they enter the system there are programs and "catches" that keep them returning or not leaving at all.
The construction lobby keeps the state and federal budgets flush with new capital for building more and more prisons. As they build them the demand for more inmates increases. Then mere is the slave labor within the prison cells which is also known as "prison industries".

Hellboy himself traces a less-than-direct route to his job as defender of good. He was conjured from Hell by the Nazis. Ripped from his fiery home in an arcane ritual involving an evil Russian spirit medium, Hellboy is brought to Earth. He is nabbed from the Nazis by the Allies under the direction of the leader of the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense, a Professor Broom, who is aided less by the soldiers in his company than by a strategically deployed Baby Ruth candy bar. The young devil is embraced by the soldiers and, in turn, raised by the professor as his son. The soldiers nicknamed the infant Hellboy.
