The combination of health savings accounts (HSAs) and qualified high deductible health plans (QHDHPs) has proven to be a powerful weapon in the battle of rising health insurance costs.
Because consumers who use this solution have an opportunity to save hundreds and even thousands of dollars on health insurance premiums, these plans have become increasingly popular with Utah residents since their introduction in 2003.

As health care costs grow and workers are asked to carry more of those costs, high-deductible insurance plans are becoming more popular.
But many people are finding an unexpected cost: doctors who expect their full payment upfront.

This paper explores the financial properties of a concept product called an advanced-life delayed annuity (ALDA). The ALDA is a variant of a pure deferred annuity contract that is acquired by installments, adjusted for consumer price inflation, and pays off toward the end of the human life cycle. The ALDA concept is aimed at the growing population of North Americans without access to a traditional defined benefit (DB) pension plan and the implicit longevity insurance that a DB plan contains. I show that under quite reasonable pricing assumptions, a consumer can invest or allocate $1 per month, while saving for retirement, and receive between $20 and $40 per month in benefits, assuming the deductible in this insurance policy is set high enough. Paying for mortgage insurance is a fact of life for the vast majority of home buyers who can't cough up a 20 percent down payment. But if you get a loan with mortgage insurance this year, at least there's one upside: your premium payments are tax-deductible.
The 109th Congress, in its final hours, passed legislation allowing homebuyers to write off the cost of premiums on their 2007 taxes as part of the Tax Relief and Health Care Act of 2006.

Recently our manager informed us that there were changes to the Virginia Condominium Law regarding insurance deductibles. I am not clear what the changes were and what we as a board need to do about them. Can you give us the latest information and let us know what we need to do?
You manager is correct. During the last session, the Virginia General Assembly, succumbing to pressure from a few members of the insurance industry, repealed the one-year-old law that had allowed condominium associations to charge the deductible to a homeowner when the source of damage to the common elements and other units came from his unit. This change was effective July 1, 2004.

New Jersey will soon learn exactly how many public workers chose low-cost, high-deductible health insurance plans, but many, including Governor Christie, aren't expecting that number to be high enough to save significant money.
When Christie pushed to offer government workers a set of health plans with low premiums but higher out-of-pocket costs for care, he pointed to Indiana, where three-quarters of state workers enrolled in those pay-as-you-go plans this year.
